A good mud mask can leave skin feeling properly clean and smooth. Use it too often, though, and you can strip away the oils your skin needs. So how often is right? For most people, the answer is once or twice a week. Here's how to find your own rhythm.
The short answer: 1–2 times a week
Clay and mud masks work by drawing out excess oil and lifting away dirt and dead skin from the surface. That's exactly what you want every now and then, but not every day. Using a mask once or twice a week gives your skin a deep clean while leaving time for its natural moisture barrier to stay balanced.
How often for your skin type
- Oily skin: up to twice a week. If your T-zone gets shiny by midday, a second weekly session can help keep things in check.
- Combination skin: once or twice a week. You can also apply it only on your oilier areas (forehead, nose and chin) and skip the cheeks.
- Normal skin: once a week is usually plenty.
- Dry skin: once a week or every 10 days, and rinse it off a little earlier, before it fully dries.
- Sensitive skin: start with once a week, and try a small patch on your inner arm first.
How long to leave it on
Leave the mask on for 15–20 minutes, until it dries and lightens in colour. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry. If your skin is on the dry side, rinse it at around the 10–15 minute mark instead. You'll still get the cleansing effect without that tight, over-dried feeling.
Signs you're overdoing it
Listen to your skin. If you notice any of these, cut back to once a week:
- Skin feels tight or stretched for hours afterwards
- Flaky or rough patches appear
- Redness that doesn't settle within an hour
- Your skin suddenly gets oilier (a sign it's compensating for being stripped)
Get more from every session
- Start with clean skin. Wash your face first so the mask works on your skin, not on makeup or sunscreen.
- Apply a thin, even layer. A thick layer doesn't work better; it just takes longer to dry and uses more product.
- Avoid the eyes and mouth. The skin there is thinner and doesn't need it.
- Moisturise afterwards. This is the step most people skip. A light moisturiser right after rinsing keeps skin soft.
- Pick a regular day. Sunday evening works for a lot of people: a weekly reset before the week starts.
What about using it on the body?
The same rhythm works for the body. Once or twice a week on areas like the back, shoulders, elbows or knees is plenty. The 250 ml jar is made for exactly that.
